No. 7 Louisville gets balanced attack in rout of Providence
NCAA Basketball Betting Lines
02/18/2009 -
Louisville, KY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Edgar Sosa scored a game-high 18 points and
five other players scored in double-figures as seventh-ranked Louisville
handled Providence, 94-76, in a Big East conference matchup from Freedom Hall.
Terrence Williams chipped in with 17 points, eight assists and six rebounds,
while Samardo Samuels also had 17 points for Louisville (20-5, 11-2, Big
East), which has won two in a row since an embarrassing blowout loss to Notre
Dame. The Cardinals have won 12 of their last 14 contests overall.
Earl Clark had a game-high 10 rebounds to go along with 13 points and seven
assists for the Cardinals.
Sharaud Curry, Weyinmi Efejuku and Jonathan Kale each had 15 points apiece to
lead Providence (16-10, 8-6), which was unable to build off two straight wins.
The Friars have dropped four of six overall.
Jeff Xavier added 12 points and Randall Hanke eight in defeat.
"They are a great offensive basketball team," Louisville head coach Rick
Pitino said. "I told our guys they are Notre Dame on steroids. That is a bad
word to use right now, but what they do is they can all take you off the
bounce."
With Providence holding a 46-45 lead at the half, the upset-minded Friars
hung on to its slim advantage through the early stages of the second with a
Curry jumper good for a 53-50 advantage.
However, the visitors were unable to keep the momentum going. After a
Louisville timeout, the Cardinals tightened things up on the defensive end and
sparked by a Preston Knowles jumper, proceeded to outscore Providence 22-3 and
grab a comfortable 72-56 lead with 8:38 to play.
The Friars were able to cut the deficit down to 13 at 77-64 after four
straight free throws with 6 1/2 minutes left, but Louisville quickly responded
with a Sosa layup and Providence wouldn't threaten in the final minutes.
"I think what I told my team after the game was that for 20 minutes, we played
like we had a chance out there," Providence head coach Keno Davis said. "Then
they obviously showed that they were a better team out there than we are now.
With four games left we have to improve as a team. We need to be able to play
through more physical contact, which has not been good for us as of late.
In a back-and-forth first half, Louisville went on an 8-0 spurt near the
midway point to break a 23-all tie. Jerry Smith and Andre McGee each nailed
three-pointers and Samuels' dunk put the Cardinals in front by a 31-23 margin
with just under nine minutes left.
But a 13-4 run finalized by a Hanke layup gave Providence a 36-35 lead with
4:52 remaining and the visitors would finish up the half ahead by that same
margin as Kale's two free throws provided a 46-45 edge at the break.
Game Notes

Dame also on Saturday...The Cardinals have won eight straight contests in the
series and are a perfect 5-0 in Louisville...Knowles finished with 11 points,
while Smith had 10...The Cardinals shot 54.7 percent from the field, compared

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.
Bet NFL Sports Lines
Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.
Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.
A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.
Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
