Chapel Hill, NC (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Tyler Hansbrough tallied 27 points and
seven rebounds, and the third-ranked Tar Heels won their 10th straight game by
defeating in-state rival NC State, 89-80.
Hansbrough rebounded after his eight-point effort against Miami-Florida and
kept North Carolina (24-2, 10-2 ACC) two games clear for the conference lead.
Danny Green shot 8-of-12 from the field for 19 points, and Ty Lawson added 17
points and nine assists.
Wayne Ellington scored 16 points, including nine in a row in the second half
that put the game away.
Javier Gonzalez had a team-high 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Wolfpack
(14-10, 4-7), who had won three of their last four games. Tracy Smith had 15
points and eight rebounds, while Dennis Horner added 13 points in a losing
effort.
Brandon Costner scored 12 points for NC State.
Tied at 19 with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, UNC scored the
next five points, taking a 24-19 lead on Ellington's layup.
NC State responded with a 7-0 burst, and Smith's jumper put the visitors ahead
by two with 7 1/2 minutes left.
The Tar Heels finally took some control, putting together a 13-3 run to seize
an eight-point lead. Green and Thompson each had four points in the spurt, and
Thompson's bucket with 2:55 left made it a 37-29 game.
The Wolfpack closed to within 39-36 at halftime.
NC State scored the first basket of the second to get to within one, but UNC
scored 14 straight points to take a commanding lead. Hansbrough's three-point
play began the run, Green added the next five points, and Lawson's two
consecutive baskets made it 51-38.
Ellington closed it out with a basket to put the hosts ahead by 15 with 16:25
to play.
The lead hovered around 10 until Ellington went off for nine straight Tar Heel
points late in the game. He hit a three-point play with 8 1/2 minutes to go
and followed with three baskets in a 1:02 span to give North Carolina a 77-59
edge.
The Wolfpack failed to threaten down the stretch.

North Carolina leads the all-time series, 140-75...The Tar Heels improved to
12-1 at home, while the Wolfpack fell to 2-7 on the road...UNC has taken six
straight and 12-of-13 meetings with NC State...North Carolina shot 55.4

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.
Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
